Dr. Dana P. Launer, the founding member of the practice, came to La Jolla in 1979. For many years he was a partner in a very successful and prestigious mutli-specialty surgical group practice. He embarked upon his solo practice in 1996 and began to focus primarily on colon and rectal surgery. Dr. Worsey was recruited in 1999 from the Cleveland Clinic where Dr. Launer also trained. The partnership was formalized in 2001 as Advanced Surgical Associates; in 2008 the practice name was changed to San Diego Colon and Rectal Surgeons to reflect the specialized practice. Sadly, Dr. Launer passed away in 2010.

In 2013 Dr. Beiermeister joined the practice and he and Dr. Worsey are the only surgeons at Scripps Memorial in La Jolla to have completed colorectal surgery fellowships approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Council. Likewise, they are the only surgeons to hold board certification conferred by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dr. Worsey and Dr. Beiermeister introduced Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols to Scripps Memorial Hospital in 2018 and we have found these measures dramatically speed up recovery and discharge. Also both surgeons have helped plan and direct Surgical Site Infection prevention measures throughout the Scripps system. As well as performing traditional open and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Beiermeister also performs robotic colon and rectal surgery and indeed serves on the Scripps Joint Operating Committee for robotic surgery. Dr. Worsey has served as the co-chair of the Scripps Surgery Care Line since 2016.

Drs. Worsey and Beiermeister are the only surgeons at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla approved to manage colon and rectal cancer in the Scripps MD Anderson program.
